Simultaneous Ammonia removal and Methane Production from Chicken Manure under Dry Thermophilic Condition

چکیده
In a trail to improve and reduce the cost of dry anaerobic fermentation of chicken manure with ammonia stripping through biogas recycling, raw chicken manure (RCM) is used as a sole substrate instead of using treated chicken manure (TCM) or mixture of TCM:RCM (1:1) used previously. Biogas produced was ranged from 23.555 L kg-CM-1 with methane percentage of 70 to 85%, the amount which is 61 to 95% and 109 to 141% higher than that obtained from TCM and mixture of TCM and RCM (1:1). Ammonia removal reached 82.7% keeping the ammonia level in the reactor in most batches less than 3.6 g-N kg. Acetate was less than 20 mmol kg at the end of each batch. A maximum of 324 ml g-VS of methane was obtained which is quiet higher than that obtained from any other previous study. Additionally RCM could be used as a substrate [F. Abouelenien . N. Effects of Temperature and Carbon-Nitrogen (C/N) Ratio on the Performance of Anaerobic Co-Digestion of Dairy Manure, Chicken Manure and Rice Straw: Focusing on Ammonia Inhibition
Anaerobic digestion is a promising alternative to disposal organic waste and co-digestion of mixed organic wastes has recently attracted more interest. This study investigated the effects of temperature and carbon-nitrogen (C/N) ratio on the performance of anaerobic co-digestion of dairy manure (DM), chicken manure (CM) and rice straw (RS). We found that increased temperature improved the metha...
متن کاملEvaluation of biogas production potential by dry anaerobic digestion of switchgrass--animal manure mixtures.
Anaerobic digestion is a biological method used to convert organic wastes into a stable product for land application with reduced environmental impacts. The biogas produced can be used as an alternative renewable energy source. Dry anaerobic digestion [>15% total solid (TS)] has an advantage over wet digestion (<10% TS) because it allows for the use of a smaller volume of reactor and because it...
متن کاملMass and Energy Balances of Dry Thermophilic Anaerobic Digestion Treating Swine Manure Mixed with Rice Straw
To evaluate the feasibility of swine manure treatment by a proposed Dry Thermophilic Anaerobic Digestion (DT-AD) system, we evaluated the methane yield of swine manure treated using a DT-AD method with rice straw under different C/N ratios and solid retention time (SRT) and calculated the mass and energy balances when the DT-AD system is used for swine manure treatment from a model farm with 10...

This study evaluated the efficacy of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)‐coated powdered activated carbon particles as a biofiltration medium. This material exhibited excellent properties as a biofiltration medium with a water holding capacity of 1.39 g H2O/g‐dry PVA; wet porosity of 0.53; and significantly lower pressure drop than that of commonly reported biofilter media such as compost. Bench‐scale biof...
متن کاملBiogas production from undiluted chicken manure and maize silage: A study of ammonia inhibition in high solids anaerobic digestion.
The feasibility of co-digestion of chicken manure (CM) and maize silage (MS) without water dilution was investigated in 5-L digesters. Specific methane production (SMP) of 0.309LCH4g(-1) volatile solids (VS) was achieved but only at lower %CM. Above a critical threshold for total ammonia nitrogen (TAN), estimated at 7gNL(-1), VFA accumulated with a characteristic increase in acetic acid followe...
